Hi all,
I wanted to get in touch to let you know about some hugely exciting news from Breakthrough which has been in the press in the past couple of days.
We are hugely proud to announce that our scientists have discovered a new cancer treatment which could be used with about a third of breast cancer patients and a number of other forms of cancer too. The drugs, called PARP inhibitors, will have a huge impact on cancer patients in the future as they work in a very targeted way, which means fewer side effects.
Here is the summary of the findings from Professor Alan Ashworth, Director of the Breakthrough Research Centre at the Institute of Cancer Research, who led on this research:
“I think this new class of drugs represents a real breakthrough in cancer treatment. A clinical trial has shown this year that these drugs could be used to treat rare forms of cancer that run in families. Importantly, this drug, given in tablet form, had very few side effects, unlike chemotherapy.
"Our scientists have now shown that PARP inhibitors could be used to treat thousands of patients. These include common cancers such as breast, skin, womb, prostrate or intestinal cancer.
"We still need to await the results of clinical trials but we are optimistic these drugs have a big future. This shows the real benefits of applying cutting edge science to cancer treatment."
These results have made front page news and I have attached just some of the last couple of days' articles which I hope you will enjoy reading.
On behalf of all of us at Breakthrough, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Golf2Golf and Pink Ribbon Golf for your support; it is only with the invaluable help of supporters like you that we are able to continue saving lives and changing futures with our world-class research.
We hope that you will continue to support us as we work to remove the fear of breast cancer for good.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Claire
